Dr. Markus Fischer joins the Elgeti Lab
December 1, 2024Markus Fischer joins the Elgeti Lab as a postdoctoral researcher. Markus has a strong background in physics and machine learning. In his research, Markus will focus on developing methods to search for allosteric pockets in GPCRs and the design novel allosteric binding agents for them.
Welcome, Markus!
SFB1423 Winter Retreat
December 5, 2024Our group attended the SFB1423 Winter Retreat in Grimma. Doctoral students Dilara, Martin and Julia presented posters.
Dilara talked about establishing protocols for the expression of Y2 receptors in E. coli and HEK cells, and shared future plans. Martin reported on the technique for selecting spin labeling sites in protein molecules. He also presented a newly developed method to study the ligand-dependent conformational equilibria using DEER. Julia presented an updated version of the integrative approach to construct all-atom structural models of rare GPCR conformations from sparse DEER data. And Matthias gave talks on allosteric modulation of GPCRs and the role of conformational equilibria in signalling.
The retreat was full of discussions, sharing practical insights between members of the GPCR community. Thank you all for your work and participation!
Martin Buhlmann joins the Elgeti lab for his PhD
September 26, 2024This week, Martin Buhlmann presented and successfully defended his master’s thesis titled: “Exploring the Conformational Landscape of Maltose Binding Protein Using EPR Spectroscopy” in which he applied a novel theoretical framework to study the ligand binding to the model protein MBP.
We are excited to keep Martin as a PhD student. He will be part of the collaborative research center “Structural Dynamics of GPCR Activation and Signaling” (SFB 1423).
German Biophysical Society Meeting 2024
September 25, 2024During the three day meeting, we had many discussions with interested attendees, and had a good time with our colleagues. Thanks to the organizers for this great conference!
New review on structural modeling using EPR constraints
September 16, 2024In preparation for Julia’s PhD work, we wrote a review about structural modeling using EPR constraints. It was very interesting and important to summarize what’s out there and which tools are missing. Today it’s finally out in eLife. (read online). Great job, Julia!
Pharmacy Science Day 2024
July 3, 2024Graduate students from the Elgeti lab presented their work at Leipzig University’s first Pharmacy Science Day. Julia, Dilara and Sebastian showed posters, Martin gave a talk. Great job all of you!
Lab interns
June 21, 2024Master students Lisa, Kristin, Ludwig and Anna joined the lab for an internship (module BCH-0815). They each gave excellent project presentations! We all enjoyed having you in the lab, great work!
New paper on structural underpinnings of the µ-opioid receptor activation
April 10, 2024Our collaborative project on the structural underpinnings of super-efficacy at the µ-opioid receptor was recently published in Nature (read online). Many thanks to the Kobilka (Stanford) and Chen (Tsinghua) labs for a great collaboration. Check out the University of Leipzig’s press release here!
Sebastian Krebs presents poster at RSC ESR Conference
April 9, 2024Doctoral student Sebastian Krebs presented his poster, "Flavormaquettes with observer spin label for hyperpolarization EPR spectroscopy", at the Annual Meeting of the ESR Spectroscopy Group of the Royal Society of Chemistry at Warwick University. This work is part of the collaborative research grant "Hyperpolarization in molecular systems". Great work, Sebastian!
Martin Buhlmann joins the lab
March 1, 2024Martin Buhlmann, chemistry Master student from Leipzig, has joined the Elgeti lab for his thesis. Martin's research will focus on SDSL-EPR and different ligand binding modes in dynamic proteins. Welcome, Martin!
New paper sugar on transport by sodium glucose transporter vSGLT
November 18, 2023In this project, we integrated DEER experiments with sugar uptake measurements, electrostatic calculations and kinetic modeling to evaluate the effect of membrane potentials on vSGLT structure and transport activity.
Many thanks to the Abramson (UCLA) and Grabe (UCSF) labs for a great collaboration. Read the article in Nature Communications (read online).
Dilara Ögütcü joins the lab
November 1, 2023Dilara Ögütcü has joined the Elgeti Lab as a doctoral student. Dilara's research is focused on the structural dynamics of neuropeptide Y receptors, and she will participate in the integrated research training program offered by SFB1423 (link). Welcome, Dilara!
Julia Belyaeva receives SECAI fellowship
July 1, 2023Julia Belyaeva, a doctoral student in the Elgeti Lab, received a fellowship from the School of Embedded Composite Artificial Intelligence (SECAI; https://secai.org/de). The fellowship will support her doctoral studies at Leipzig University, which are focused on “Teaching artificial intelligence about protein dynamics.” Congrats, Julia!
